In 2023, IGM undertook a greens’ resurfacing project at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada, over a three-and-a-half-month period. In addition to upgrading the members’ golf experience, the renovation was part of an overall water conservation effort that included eliminating the need to overseed the fairways each winter. Combined, those adjustments have saved more than 15 million gallons of water annually.

Because the area is prone to frequent drought conditions, IGM changed the greens from Bentgrass to ‘Platinum’ Paspalum, which is more drought resistant and environmentally friendly. Paspalum grass is tolerant of higher salt content in water, which allows for the use of recycled or waste water for irrigation.
In addition, unlike with Bentgrass, the major maintenance tasks for Paspalum grass – verticutting and core aeration — can be undertaken during the hot summer months when the course has fewer golfers. Paspalum grass is also more disease resistant, so fewer chemicals are needed.
The renovated greens have proven to be successful, both environmentally and for golfer satisfaction. The upgraded greens are more wear-resistant than previously and perform well, even after multiple rounds. Reflection Bay General Manager Jon Openshaw noted, “Golfer feedback on the new greens has been overwhelmingly positive. One of the most noticeable improvements members and regular guests mention is the lack of ball marks, even with thousands of golf balls landing on the greens each year. Paspalum greens are incredibly resilient, making ball marks a rare occurrence.”
Openshaw added, “The financial benefits stem primarily from the improved durability of the new turf. Our previous greens were fragile, often forcing us to limit the number of golfers on the course.”
The agronomic professionals at IGM are always looking for the most environmentally conscious ways to maintain the golf courses they care for, within the client’s budget. The Bermuda grass, used for the course fairways and roughs since Reflection Bay opened, is also known for its water-efficiency and ability to withstand high foot traffic.
“IGM has been an outstanding partner for Reflection Bay Golf Club,” said Openshaw. “Their expertise and collaboration have been invaluable, not only during the greens’ renovation but also in daily course maintenance. By working closely with them, we were able to plan and execute the entire renovation in-house, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars compared to hiring outside contractors.”
